ATEX is an explosion-proof directive under the EU CE Marking framework and constitutes a mandatory certification requirement. Its directive code is 2014/34/EU, and the certification standards are the EN 60079 series. What enterprises often refer to as explosion-proof CE certification, 2014/34/EU certification, or EN 60079 standard certification actually all mean ATEX Certification.
Regarding ATEX certification bodies, multiple organizations are authorized to issue certificates. All of them are EU Notified Bodies for ATEX and hold equivalent certification qualifications. Common certification bodies include TUV, CSA, TI, ECM, etc. In the certification process, these bodies usually adopt the certification method of "Product Testing + Factory Audit" (Module B+D or Module B+E).
Of course, clients can also select an appropriate certification module based on the intended application environment of their products.
The certification modules under the ATEX directive are as follows:
Module A: Internal Production Control
Module B: EC Type Examination (Documentation Review + Product Testing)
Module C: Conformity to Type (A quality assurance method involving annual sample spot checks)
Module D: Explosion-Proof System Certification (Factory explosion-proof system audit with annual reviews, compliant with EN ISO/IEC 80079-34)
Module E: Product Quality Assurance System (Factory explosion-proof system audit with annual reviews, compliant with EN ISO/IEC 80079-34)
Module F: Product Verification (A quality assurance method involving verification prior to the export of each batch of goods)
Module G: Unit Certification (Applicable to single-batch certification of a specific product)
It is worth noting that currently, the ECM adopts a simplified certificate issuance process. In contrast, other bodies such as TUV, CSA, SGS, TI, etc., usually issue ATEX certificates through product testing and factory audits. They also conduct on-site reviews of the manufacturing facilities of certified products every year; the validity of the certificates is maintained only if the reviews are passed. If the standards are updated, the certificates need to be renewed accordingly.
In addition, although ATEX Certification is an EU explosion-proof certification, it can also be processed through agents in China. STS is a professional agent for ATEX Certification. We have established sound cooperative relationships with international certification bodies and domestic laboratories, are familiar with certification standards and processes, and can provide guidance for on-site factory reviews.
If you need to apply for an ATEX Certificate, feel free to consult STS at any time.
